Boston mahogany sofa
This lovely full sized sofa is a ‘head nod’ reproduction channeling the original from the NY shop of Duncan Phyfe (a Scottish born American craftsman and legend, 1770-1854). The original 18th Century American Arts style Cherry/Mahogany settee was purchased for a collection in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Ours, completed entirely in Mahogany, and covered with Top Grain ‘Rich Mahogany‘ Leather, swaps the wheat-ears with the festooned drapery carvings on the back rail, while maintaining the gently curved front apron, and features soft rich leather upholstering, rather than the original, less comfortable caning. The legs are a match to the original as well, with identical turned reed-molded forelegs minus the brass casters. The wood frame was hand crafted in Boston during the mid-1960s, but the interior is completely new, from the heavy gage steel coils that have been 8-way hand-knotted, to the high density seating foam covered in real wool batting for an unbelievably comfortable sit in both feel and temperature. The entire frame has been refinished in clear varnished to create a lustrous and enduring finish, highlighting the warmth of the Mahogany, that combined with this top quality leather, will provide generations of beauty and comfort for your home or office space.
